How Does the Ninja Creami Work?

The Ninja Creami ice cream maker has some similarities to a food processor, including a motor base and a spinning blade.

However, it’s also very different, especially because the blades aren’t actually sharp!

Very different from a traditional ice cream maker, this kitchen appliance reverses the standard process of making ice cream and other frozen treats.

A liquid base is frozen in a container, then the machine shaves or chops it finely into a deliciously creamy frozen treat–all at the touch of a button.

There are different settings to use, depending on the sugar and fat content of your mixture or how vigorously the mixture needs to be spun.

How to Make Frozen Yogurt in the Ninja Creami

When it comes to making Ninja Creami frozen yogurt, the most important thing is to start with a type of yogurt that you actually like.

Freezing it doesn’t change the taste very much, so definitely choose your favorite flavor of yogurt here.

I opted to keep things simple and used Noosa vanilla yogurt, because it’s a variety I like, and one you can easily play around with by adding mix-ins and such. Stonyfield organic yogurt is another good choice.

If you’re using creamy plain yogurt without a flavor, you may want to add a teaspoon of vanilla extract and some sweetener.

Taste the yogurt first, and if it isn’t sweet enough, feel free to add some maple syrup, sugar, or monk fruit sweetener.

If you have a plain yogurt, you can stir in some chopped fresh fruit, which will be mixed into the yogurt during spinning.

Depending on the type of yogurt you’re using, this can be a low calorie Ninja Creami recipe!

How to Make It:

(Printable recipe is located below)

Add yogurt. First, you’ll add the yogurt mixture to a Ninja Creami pint container. If you’re adding any sweetener or fresh fruit, go ahead and do that now.

Freeze. Close the lid on your container and transfer it to a level surface in your freezer. Let it freeze for 24 hours.

Spin. Remove the container from the freezer and take off the lid. Place the pint into the outer bowl of the Ninja Creami machine, then secure the lid for the outer bowl. Place the outer bowl into the Ninja Creami machine and lock it into place.

Use the Lite Ice Cream button to spin your mixture. This should take about 2 minutes.

Re-Spin if needed. If the mixture is crumbly after the first spin, add a little bit of milk and use the Re-spin function to spin again. This should result in a smoother texture.

Add toppings or mix-ins. This is where your creativity can shine! You can use the mix-in function to incorporate goodies into your frozen yogurt. Or, keep it simple and just add them as toppings, like your favorite frozen yogurt shop would do!

I added a drizzle of chocolate Magic Shell to my vanilla yogurt, but with different yogurt flavors and toppings, the sky is the limit!

TIPS FOR USING THE NINJA CREAMI MACHINE

The first time you use yourNinja Creami, there’s a bit of a learning curve. But once you’ve given it a whirl, I think you’ll very quickly see how easy it is!

Here are a few things to remember:

  • Don’t fill the pint past the max fill line. The liquid will expand during freezing, and you want the blade to have room to spin when you place pint of solid bases into the machine.
  • Freeze on a level surface. This ensures the top of the frozen base is even.
  • Your Ninja Creami pint container, once frozen, will be inserted into an outer bowl.
  • The outer bowl lid, which contains the blade, will lock into place over the bowl. If needed, check the owner’s manual for lid assembly instructions.
  • Place bowl assembly into the machine, and it twists up so it locks into place within the machine. Select your function (Ice Cream function, Sorbet function, etc.) and let the machine do its work.
  • Ninja’s Creamify technology is pretty impressive, but sometimes a pint will need a re-spin if it turns out crumbly the first time. I like to add a tablespoon of liquid (usually milk) before re-spinning.
  • Sometimes you can avoid a re-spin if you let the pint sit out at room temperature for a few minutes before running the first cycle.
  • If you want to add mix-ins, like chocolate chips, you can do that after spinning. Make a well in the ice cream (roughly 1.5″ wide, extending to the bottom of the pint) and fill the well with your mix-ins. Use the Mix-In button to stir the pieces in.
  • The creamy ice cream is usually the consistency of soft serve when it’s finished. You can pop it back in the freezer for a bit if you prefer it to be a bit firmer.
  • Want to try a chocolate version? This Ninja Creami chocolate frozen yogurt is a great option!

Prep Time2 minutes

Cook Time2 minutes

Additional Time1 day

Total Time1 day 4 minutes

Ingredients

  • 16 ounces of yogurt of choice (I used Noosa brand)
  • Optional: 1 TBSP milk (for re-spinning, if needed)

Instructions

  1. Add yogurt to a Ninja Creami pint container. Use a spoon to press it down into the container, eliminating air pockets. Close lid on container.
  2. Transfer container to a flat surface in your freezer. Freeze for 24 hours.
  3. Remove from freezer and take off lid. Place pint container in the Ninja Creami outer bowl, securing outer bowl lid into place.
  4. Place outer bowl into the Ninja Creami machine, locking into place.
  5. Select the Lite Ice Cream button and let the cycle run. This should take about 2 minutes.
  6. If mixture is crumbly after spinning, add a tablespoon of milk and run it through a Re-spin cycle.

Notes

  • I used Noosa vanilla yogurt in this recipe, but you could use other varieties as well for different flavors.
  • Feel free to add mix-ins to the yogurt if you'd like. After spinning the frozen yogurt, create a well in the frozen yogurt that's about 1/2 inch wide and extends to the bottom of the container. Add your mix-ins to the well, then run it through the Mix-In cycle.
