I am interested in seeing some examples of sleeping platforms that people have built in their 80 & 100 series cruisers. I have a diesel 100 series (HZJ105R) and have made a custom storage unit with fridge slide for a 40L Engel, but I am thinking of modifying it to remove the cargo barrier and allow for sleeping inside.

The real challenge is that I am 6' 8" (204cm) tall, so for this to work I would need to work out how to tuck the front seat under the platform when setting up the bed.

6'8" ? Hmm. That's 8" taller than me. That's tall! With my front seat slid forward and the backrest tilted forward, I am comfortalble. My platform in my '94 80 is a few inches higher than the back seat bottom. Maybe you could make your platform higher and use the hedrest of the forward folded front seat as a pillow? I just hope that the 105 series has a bit more length

Hi Russell

I had the same problem. I liked to have a sleeping platform in my 100 series as well and the only way I could achieve it was to make space for about 210cm long and about 100cm wide as I did not like to loose the space for my cases. I know it is not ideal as it feels a bit cramped for 2 people side by side. I live and travel in Countries where the weather is not always ideal to deploy the Roof tent and the only alternative is to stay inside.
Previous I had the 40 litre Engel Fridge on a slider on top of my drawers but I have moved all the back seats out to accommodate the Fridge on one side and a custom made box on the other, which is very handy to put all my gear in. It takes about a half a hour to take the makeshift box, Fridge base out and the rear seats back in.
Unfortunately I could not use the mattress from my Roof tent, I had to by one which is about 200x90cm and can be rolled up and easily stored away.

Anyway, you get the idea.Landcruiser sleeping platform examples (2)

I purchase some foam floor tiles about 1 inch thick from a DIY shop, which is used on kids playing ground or similar. It is very soft and I have cut it to size with a Stanley knife to fit in between the windows and the cover panels. In fact it works better then I thought as it also insulate against heat and cold. Thats a great idea!
Love those drawers - are they the African Outback ones or ARB?
What kind of extra weight did that add?

That’s correct, they are African Outback drawers. Fantastic stuff, a bit on the expensive side but every penny worth. No holes needed to be drilled, they fit absolutely perfect. The only complain I have are the locks, the could be made out of a better material. Also the weight is an issue as it is around 170 lb.

Good info guys.

esquise that is nice looking setup you have there, I like your foam window coverings.

mrlocksmith yours is a very tidy home built example, and I like what you have done. How do you find the low headroom with your platform at that height?

I should really post up some pics of my current setup. I will dig out some photos and get them up.
